# A score reported with no status

The course sent a score but never said whether the learner passed, so the LMS has to guess.

## What you see

Reports show a score against an attempt that is still incomplete, or a passing score recorded as a fail. Different systems resolve it differently, so the same package behaves inconsistently across LMSs.

## What the check looks for

Writes to cmi.core.score.\* (1.2) or cmi.score.\* (2004) with no accompanying status write in the same session.

## Why it matters

A score is a number; the status is the judgement. SCORM does not require an LMS to derive one from the other. Some apply the mastery score, some leave the attempt open, and some mark it complete but unpassed — which is why this shows up as an inconsistency between systems rather than as an outright failure.

## How to fix it

Whenever the course sets a score it should also set the outcome. In 2004 that is cmi.success\_status for pass or fail and cmi.completion\_status for whether the content was finished; the two are deliberately separate. In 1.2 the single cmi.core.lesson\_status carries both.
